Regaining Control at Empower PT
By Theresa Feola, Physical Therapist
THERE MAY BE TIMES throughout your life that you may occasionally leak urine with activity or just can’t make it to the bathroom in time. Perhaps you thought that your only solution is to wear a Depend® pad. At Empower Physical Therapy we are happy to report that there are many options to prevent urinary incontinence from occurring.
Urinary incontinence (UI) is defined by the International Continence Society Standardization Committee as a condition in which involuntary loss of urine is “objectively demonstratable and is a social or hygienic problem.” There are four types of UI: urge, stress, mixed and overflow. Stress incontinence is well known as the leakage of urine with a cough, laugh, sneeze or jump. Urge incontinence is the sudden strong need to urinate, often so difficult to suppress that it leads to leakage. This is usually seen as frequent urination, numerous trips to the bathroom at night and inability to delay urination. Mixed incontinence is the combination of stress and urge incontinence. Lastly, overflow incontinence is caused by incomplete emptying of the bladder due to poor bladder muscle contraction or physical obstruction to emptying. Symptoms may include a continuous small leak or dribble, delay in initiation of the urine stream and/or frequent night urination.
No matter the type or cause of incontinence, patients are reluctant to discuss this issue. At Empower Physical Therapy, we make it easy. In our relaxed, comfort able environment, we treat urinary and fecal incontinence in both men and women. Our experienced staff specializes in disorders of the pelvic floor. We address the problem with patient education, including behavior modification, delay techniques, bladder retraining and proper diet recommendations.
We work with patients to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles utilizing biofeedback (transmission of electrical signals from muscles to a computer screen to assist learning), use of proper breathing techniques to assist control, as well as strengthening exercises for the back, hips and abdomen. We are also trained to incorporate therapeutic exercises based on Pilates and yoga practices. We ensure that patients can carry out proper strengthening in work duties, home life, recreational and social activities.
At Empower Physical Therapy we will assist you, step by step, to regain control of your bladder/bowels. The results are astounding. Finally, you can stop thinking about where the bathroom is and declining invitations for fear of leakage.
Don’t be like the millions of Americans ignoring the symptoms. Take control and get back to household chores without leakage issues. Resume your favorite recreational activities, such as walking, dancing, swimming, attending movies and concerts. Don’t hesitate to on the bus or in the car.
