Vision 2020: Making a Difference for Women in America
By Eileen Connelly-Robbins, EVP & COO, The Main Line Chamber of CommerecePhiladelphia was the birthplace of equality for men.
Now it is the home of a movement to end gender inequality. This movement, called Vision 2020, is a decade-long initiative to make equality a national priority through shared leadership among women and men. Its purpose is to bring about significant progress and women’s leadership by the year 2020, the centennial of the 19th amendment to the Constitution, which gave women the right to vote.
D
eveloped by the Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine, Vision 2020 is spearheaded by co-chairs Lynn Yeakel and Rosemarie Grecco. At the inaugural summit in October 2010, they welcomed more than 1,000 women, including delegates from every state, who gathered to start conversations about breaking barriers to women’s equality. The second annual Congress will convene in Chicago in October 2011.
Vision 2020 and its delegates have established five national goals:
- Achieve pay equity.
- Increase the number of women in senior leadership positions.
- Educate employers about the value of policies and practices that enable men and women to share fairly their family responsibilities.
- Educate new generations of girls and boys to respect their differences.
- Mobilize women in America to vote.
