Summer Sizzles!

By Cynthia Goch

THIS JULY/AUGUST COLUMN of “Foodie News” is for you! Join me in celebrating summer fun, food, holidays and family milestones.
At this time of the year, we celebrate the end of the school year—and much-needed rejuvenation for students, parents and teachers. Congratulations go to graduates and those who are commencing to the next level of education. We commemorate our great country’s independence. We gather with family and friends for reunions, weddings, baby and bridal showers. We head to the shores or mountains for vacations. We relish the longer days for traveling and spending quality time with our loved ones.
Food is a wonderful part of each event and gathering. Through it, we enhance our connections with special people at barbecues, picnics, shared snacks and distinctive meals. Food is a highlight of our “good old summertime” fun in the sun. It brings back cherished memories—of traditions, heartfelt emotions, comfort or empowering experiences.

The Goch Behind GochYa Cooking

Sometimes people ask,”Who is Cynthia Goch?”

Behind my book MaMa Mia Cucina, recipes and cooking classes, is a woman with passion, dreams and a family history of nourishing food and conversation.
When I think about summer, I recall spending time with my grandparents. From my spot on their porch, I watched my grandfather weed and care for his vegetable garden; I learned about growth. After harvesting food, my grandmother and I spent hours in the kitchen, canning and preserving produce, talking all the while. While I learned how fresh food went from the vine and stalk to the table—into delicious, homemade dishes—I listened to her stories about the past, reflections on her experiences, and hopes for the future. She also asked about my hopes and dreams; we wondered what my life would be like.
Of several things I was sure. I wanted to become a wife and mom, to create a special home for a new family. I also aspired to become educated and to contribute to a better world through connections with my family, friends and community.

My childhood dreams are now my reality. When I have doubts, however, I travel in my heart and mind back to my grandparents’ porch in summertime—and all it represented. There I find comfort and regain feelings of confidence and empowerment. It keeps me sharing gifts with    you—helping you celebrate food, family and friends. Cook  and Share. Connect!
