The Wentworth – Victorian Charm, Home Comforts
By Susan Casso Rogers

What is behind the beautiful, red front door and awning at 112 South Church Street in West Chester? Providing all the comforts of home for senior men and women who manage their lives independently, but want the camaraderie, security and comforts of a home-like residential community, The Wentworth offers a wonderful life style.
The Wentworth was founded in 1899 by a group of local churchwomen who formed a “non-sectarian boarding home for women.” The original charter provided for “an abiding place, where, at a moderate cost, all the needful comforts of a home can be obtained.” Taking its name from Mrs. Anna Wentworth Park, one of its founding members, The Wentworth was originally located in the 300 block of South Church Street. Local churches supported its early foundation and, in 1900, The Wentworth Association purchased the charming structure at 112 South Church Street where it remains today.

The Wentworth is conveniently located within walking distance to West Chester’s banks, churches, restaurants, hair salons, shops and services. The 18-room, Victorian- style home features many lovely and comfortable areas such as the antique-filled front parlor for receiving guests, sunny solarium for chatting with other residents or playing games, and enchanting outdoor gardens and the recently created Marshall Patio for strolling and enjoying nature. Each resident has a private room—decorated to his or her personal tastes—with individually controlled heat, some with private baths. Air conditioners can be installed in each room.
A dedicated volunteer board manages The Wentworth. Sixteen to 20 board members attend regular meetings, remain involved with the residents, oversee building maintenance and up-keep and arrange residents’ entertainment and day trips. The Resident Assistant, on staff at all times, is ready, willing and able to assist residents. Residents receive weekly linen service and enjoy on-site laundry facilities. Additionally, The Wentworth’s chefs prepare three meals per day that are served family style by staff members in two large, comfortable dining rooms. The Executive Director oversees daily operations, personnel and financial aspects of the community. Staff members go out of their way to help residents celebrate holidays and special events by decorating, preparing extraordinary meals and engaging them in traditional festivities.
If you or a senior member of your family is considering a move to make life easier, more affordable and safe, please consider The Wentworth. For a tour or more information, please contact our Executive Director at 610-696-8044. We would be happy to show you or your loved ones the beauty of The Wentworth.
