New Teen Meditation Classes This Fall At Awaken With Light
By Nancy Gentle Boudrie

If you want your middle or high school student to successfully navigate the pressures of adolescence as well as learn life skills to handle the more complicated stresses of adulthood, put meditation on your back to school shopping list.

Sometimes, adults may struggle to relate to the stress facing adolescents since we become caught up in our own problems and remember our own experiences more warmly as the years pass.  However, a study conducted by the American Psychological Association notes that stress in young people continues to rise.  Doing well in school, fitting in with friends and body image, are stressing out kids the most, according to the survey.

Just as we teach our children to exercise, eat right, get enough sleep, pay bills on time and other life skills so they’ll make the right decisions when we aren’t around, we also need to guide them to positive methods of identifying and managing strong emotions and productive ways of blowing off steam.  Meditation provides a path for young people to relax, focus and improve performance both in the classroom and on the sports field.  Teaching this skill in the early teens can help adolescents resist the pull of alcohol, drugs or other destructive behavior to deal with stress.

Many schools have adopted mindfulness programs since they help kids learn by teaching them to be more responsive, focused and more apt to pay attention, according to a 2004 survey conducted by the Garrison Institute in New York.  Nemours, one of the top pediatric health practices in the United States, endorses meditation for teen athletes and specifically recommends that young athletes visualize success and sit quietly to focus on their breathing.

I am excited to announce that I will be offering meditation for teens this fall. My classes are designed for teens, middle and high school students, which allow them to relax and participate with their peers.  Each session is 45 minutes and begins with an exercise to center breathing.  Next, attendees experience a guided meditation and end with an uplifting reflection.
